
Raskolnikov, a penniless and desperate former student living in the slums of St Petersburg, commits a random murder without remorse or regret. He imagines himself to be a great man, acting for a higher purpose that transcends conventional moral laws. But as he engages in a dangerous game with a suspicious police investigator, Raskolnikov is haunted by the growing voice of his conscience, and the noose of his own guilt tightens around his neck.
