Adam Bede is the first novel by Mary Ann Evans (George Eliot), published in 1859. In the center of the plot are four characters from rural society: a beautiful girl named Hetty Sorrel, Captain Arthur in love with her, carpenter Adam Bede, who receives a rebuff from Hetty, and her virtuous cousin Dinah Morris. The love triangle destroys not only the fate of young people, but also the life of the entire rural society.
