"Taras Bulba" is a story by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol, published in 1835. The plot takes place in the first half of the 17th century in the region where the Zaporozhye Cossacks live. The main characters are the old Cossack Taras Bulba and his sons, Ostap and Andriy. The father decides that it is time for his sons to test themselves on the battlefield, since there is no better science for a real Cossack. Subsequent events bring discord between the two generations.
