The action takes place in a flophouse where representatives of different social classes, who have lost their status and position, reside. Among them are drunkards, beggars, criminals, former craftsmen, intellectuals, and others who are disillusioned with life and have lost hope for a better future. Some desperately try to escape their situation, while others have given up. Relationships between them are complex, with frequent quarrels. Two opposing forces in the narrative — truth and lies — clash head-on after the arrival of the old man Luka, who believes in lies for salvation, saying "your truth, not theirs."
