The main character of the book is a representative of the lower nobility, a hidalgo from La Mancha named Alonso Quijano. He reads a lot of chivalric novels, this leads to the fact that he seems to go crazy, after which he has the desire to become a knight errant himself, to revive chivalry and serve his people, under the name Don Quixote of La Mancha.
