Hugo wrote this book on the island of Guernsey during his time in exile from France. The book begins with a biography of Shakespeare of about twenty pages, where one may find some inaccuracies. However, then the author masterfully criticizes the illustrious geniuses. Hugo reflects not only on Shakespeare, but also on Homer, Dante, Cervantes and many others. Many critics took this approach negatively and decided that there was more Hugo in this work than Shakespeare.
