Middlemarch is a novel by the English author Mary Anne Evans, who wrote as George Eliot. The book was published from 1871 to 1872. The plot is set in Middlemarch, a fictional English Midland town in 1829 to 1832. The book addresses many issues. For example, it covers such issues as the status of women, the nature of marriage and religion, politics, reforms, and much more. Eliot also uses realism to encompass historical events such as the accession of King William IV. With the best features of the late-Victorian novels, the novel is rightfully considered a masterpiece of British literature.
