The novel takes place in Scotland in 1752. Its main character, on whose behalf the story is being narrated, is a young man from an old family, David Balfour. After the death of his parents, he tries to find his place in this world. With a letter of introduction from the Essendin priest Mr. Campbell, he goes to the castle of Sco on Cramond, which is owned by his uncle, Ebenezer Balfour.
