William Elliot Griffis, Ph.D., L.H.D. (1843-1928) was an American Orientalist, writer, and Congregationalist preacher. In September 1870, Griffis was invited to Japan to organize schools on the Western model. He has prepared a new Japanese series of books for reading and spelling, as well as ABC books for Japanese students in English.
