Cakes and Ale, or, The Skeleton in the Cupboard is a 1930 novel by W. Somerset Maugham. The novel's protagonist, William Ashenden, agrees to write a biography of his friend Edward Driffield, a famous Victorian author. In a strange way, Ashenden's own growing up is threaded into the story of Driffield, who at the beginning was not deemed the best creator because he wrote about the working class. By the way, Somerset called this book his favorite.
